Dirt Road: A Photo Story

Image
Dirt Road: A Photo Story By Evan Finley & Clayton Lynch Dirt Road Brewing is a local brewery/pub located at 13th and main downtown Philomath, OR. Since 2019, Dirt Road has been serving the community fresh artisan pizza and a wide variety of in-house brewed beer. Despite spending the majority of its time open under COVID-19 pandemic restrictions, Dirt Road is thriving, expanding and has become a Philomath staple. Dirt Road opened its doors to the public in August of 2019, but founder Chuck Cox has been brewing beer for quite a while. It all started in his garage with a home brew kit. Overtime, the brewing system in Cox’s garage grew larger and more advanced as the positive feedback from friends and family grew. Cox says opening the pub was a part of the natural progression. Before Cox started Dirt Road he was a builder and contractor, as most of the operations of the brewery and pub have been taken over by his head brewer and staff, Cox continues to build houses on the side.  Dirt

Book Review: ITS WHAT I DO

Image
Source: Linsey Addario Journalistic reporting of the ravages of war, desolation of famine and devastation of natural disasters has been widely available and commonplace for many decades. Such journalism is so familiar, that here on the relative safety of U.S. soil, it can be easy to take it for granted and to not recognize that for this reporting to take place, journalists must position themselves on the frontlines and in harm's way. This is especially true of photojournalism and is one of the most striking elements of conflict/war photographer Lynsey Addario 's memoir IT’S WHAT I DO. Addario has traveled and photographed the world extensively, very often on the front lines of conflict. Her images display the harsh realities of war and the impact on humanity. In her memoir, Addario shares many harrowing details of the events she recorded in her photographs and what she had to endure to capture them. Not all of her assignments required occupying the same space as flying bullets.

The term at LBCC is cruising along and admittedly this blog post for Photojournalism is a wee bit past due. It is photographer's choice and this photographer chose to photograph McMinnville Oregon’s own UFO festival. Since 1999 (excluding 2020 being canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic) McMenamins’s Hotel Oregon ,in McMinnville, Oregon, has hosted their annual UFO festival. For the 3 day event, the city of McMinnville closes its historic downtown on 3rd street to vehicle traffic as thousands of spectators and participants come from near and far. The event is in honor of locals Paul and Evelyn Trent who, on May 11, 1950, sighted and photographed what appeared to be a flying saucer.  The Event draws people who participate to varying degrees, from simple accessories to elaborate full body suits. Regardless of attire, there are many that take the event quite seriously as Pacific Narrowest restaurant chain McMenamins (who founded and hosts the event) features guest speakers on the top

Hometown [current]: Philomath, OR

This week “hometown” photos is par for the course, for the ol’ photojournalism class. I feel like I have had a number of “hometown’s “ in my relatively short life, that is why I chose to take photos in the town I live in. And a great little town it is: Philomath, Oregon. This building is an unmistakable landmark in Philomath. It is located on the northwest end of Philomath’s downtown. Purpose built to be a college in 1867, it functioned as such until 1929. Following the close of the college, the building was used as a church, it is now one of the Benton County Historical Society's museums and features both fixed and rotating guest exhibits. The museum is open Wednesday to Saturday 10am - 4:30pm. Directions and more information can be found at  bentoncountymuseums.org Morgan Kuschel has worked at the Dizzy Hen Cafe for about 9 months. Kuschel is no stranger to the food industry and has previously worked at several other prominant restaurants in the area. The Dizzy Hen is located on

He studied cinematography at Pennsylvania University and then went on to work at a local Newspaper. After two years, McCurry traveled to India for the first time. McCurry fell in love with the experience of traveling with a camera. “There’s a contemplative or meditative quality to photography which I find to be a sort of peaceful state. I love being able to travel the world, and experience different cultures and landscapes.”- Steve McCurry It was on that first trip to India, that McCurry made his way to Pakistan and connected with a group refugees from Afghanistan. Russia had just invaded Afghanistan and the boarders were being restricted. The group of refugees helped smuggle McCurry into Afghanistan where he spent months
