Unidentified Flying. . .

Image
The term at LBCC is cruising along and admittedly this blog post for Photojournalism is a wee bit past due. It is photographer's choice and this photographer chose to photograph McMinnville Oregon’s own UFO festival. Since 1999 (excluding 2020 being canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic) McMenamins’s Hotel Oregon ,in McMinnville, Oregon, has hosted their annual UFO festival. For the 3 day event, the city of McMinnville closes its historic downtown on 3rd street to vehicle traffic as thousands of spectators and participants come from near and far. The event is in honor of locals Paul and Evelyn Trent who, on May 11, 1950, sighted and photographed what appeared to be a flying saucer.  The Event draws people who participate to varying degrees, from simple accessories to elaborate full body suits. Regardless of attire, there are many that take the event quite seriously as Pacific Narrowest restaurant chain McMenamins (who founded and hosts the event) features guest speakers on the top

Hometown [current]: Philomath, OR

Image
This week “hometown” photos is par for the course, for the ol’ photojournalism class. I feel like I have had a number of “hometown’s “ in my relatively short life, that is why I chose to take photos in the town I live in. And a great little town it is: Philomath, Oregon. This building is an unmistakable landmark in Philomath. It is located on the northwest end of Philomath’s downtown. Purpose built to be a college in 1867, it functioned as such until 1929. Following the close of the college, the building was used as a church, it is now one of the Benton County Historical Society's museums and features both fixed and rotating guest exhibits. The museum is open Wednesday to Saturday 10am - 4:30pm. Directions and more information can be found at  bentoncountymuseums.org Morgan Kuschel has worked at the Dizzy Hen Cafe for about 9 months. Kuschel is no stranger to the food industry and has previously worked at several other prominant restaurants in the area. The Dizzy Hen is located on

Source: Steve McCurry Steve McCurry has produced some of the most iconic images from the last 50 years. Known for photographs that showcase the vibrance and intimate humanity of divers cultures around the world. McCurry was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1950. He studied cinematography at Pennsylvania University and then went on to work at a local Newspaper. After two years, McCurry traveled to India for the first time. McCurry fell in love with the experience of traveling with a camera. “There’s a contemplative or meditative quality to photography which I find to be a sort of peaceful state. I love being able to travel the world, and experience different cultures and landscapes.”- Steve McCurry It was on that first trip to India, that McCurry made his way to Pakistan and connected with a group refugees from Afghanistan. Russia had just invaded Afghanistan and the boarders were being restricted. The group of refugees helped smuggle McCurry into Afghanistan where he spent months

America Association of Woman in Community Colleges (AAWCC) holds their annual clothing sale in front of the Linn Benton Community College, Albany campus Library. All items for the sale were donated to the AAWCC. All clothing items are priced at $1 each--to make clothing accessible to all students and staff-- and the proceeds from sales will go to funding programs that support students. The AAWCC plans to use what clothing remains after the sale to make a professional clothes closet, where students can go get a clean outfits for job interviews, etc. In honor of Giving Day, May 10th 2023, the LBCC foundation provides a free pancake feed in the Albany campus court yard. Juston Warden--STOKED 2 SK8, Albany, Oregon

Image
Juston Warden works at STOKED 2 SK8 skateboard shop downtown Albany, Oregon. Warden has been working at the shop since summer of 2022, but he has been involved with the shop since it opened in 2021 and is long time friends with the owner of the shop. STOKED 2 SK8 is the only privately owned skateboard store in Albany and has become a meeting place for a vibrant skating community in Albany, says Warden.  Warden has been skateboarding for over 20 years and is sponsored by STOKED 2 SK8. In addition to working at STOKED 2 SK8, he is a co-founder of Father Figure Skateboards. Warden says the company was started when two of his longtime skate friends became dad’s, but they still loved skateboarding and were looking for ways to spend time together. Warden doesn’t have children, but he is a proud dog dad.    May 5, 2023

ON THE JOB!

Image
This week, for LBCC photojournalism, I was assigned to photograph people at work. After getting past the initial awkward experience of asking someone if I can take a photo of them working (and the occasional rejection) I really enjoyed getting to know the people I photographed. Rachel Moulton works at Tried and True Coffee’s downtown Corvallis, Oregon. Moulton works at both Tried and True’s downtown and Southtown locations.   May 4, 2023  Steve Hanold is a second generation bus driver for the Albany Transit System (ATS.) Hanold has been a bus driver for 26 years and loves the job so much he plans to keep driving even after he could retire. On May 3rd, Honald is driving the campus connect route between Albany and Corvallis.
